What is Coolant?
Most automotive engines are cooled to remove heat, by using a water/ coolant mixture. The term engine coolant is widely used in the automotive industry, which covers its primary function of convective heat transfer for internal combustion engines. Corrosion inhibitors clean debris from cooling system, removes rust, scale, and sludge from system, cleans rust from coolant lines, and replenishes depleted coolant additives, which is added to help protect vehicle’s’ coolant system. Antifreeze was developed to protect the engine against all the heat/cold fluctuations that occur during the vehicle’s lifetime.
What does my coolant system do?
Your vehicle’s coolant system is extremely important It’s job is to keep the engine cooled so it does not overheat. How your cooling system works: Engine coolant, also known as antifreeze, runs through your engine’s cooling system, it moves from the radiator to the engine and then back again. The water pumps function is to keep the flow of coolant moving, and the radiator’s job is to allow cooler air to manage the temperature of the coolant allowing your vehicle’s engine to stay at a safe running temperature.
What are potential problems that can arise from not getting proper coolant flushes?
If a vehicle is continually operated with old coolant, major engine damage can occur if a coolant flush is neglected due to your vehicle not having the proper protection provided by the coolant. Some symptoms of improperly maintained cooling system include: coolant loss, temperature increase, hose failure, leaks, and hard starting. Damage to the radiator, heater core, water pump and other cooling system components is preventable by simply having your coolant flush. Simple preventative measures can ensure the longevity and performance of your vehicle and save you a ton of money! It is recommended depending on the type of coolant your vehicle uses every 30,000 miles.
How important is a coolant flush?
Over time the coolant mixture which has been circulating through your vehicle’s engine becomes contaminated with scale and rust, which can clog and damage the cooling system components. Benefits of getting a cooling system flush: better cooling system function, longer coolant life, increases vehicle performance, less chances of overheating, and rids your vehicle’s system of contaminants and replaces the old mixture with fresh coolant and water.
Your mechanic at Fidelity Auto Care will drain the fluid, and replace it with new coolant and water, and ensure that your system is in peak performance and free of leaks.
So come into Fidelity Auto Care and ask us about getting your coolant flush and while you’re here ask us about other preventative care such as an oil change!
